What is IELTS Exam ?

IELTS stands for "International English Language Testing System". It is a standardized test that measures the proficiency of non-native English speakers in the English language. The test is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study or work in an English-speaking environment.

The IELTS test is recognized and accepted by over 10,000 organizations in 140 countries, including universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies. The test is available in two formats: Academic and General Training.

The Academic version is intended for students who want to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking country. The General Training version is suitable for those who want to work, undertake training, or migrate to an English-speaking country.

The IELTS test assesses four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the scores range from 0 to 9. Candidates can take the test at various test centers around the world.

IELTS Modules

There are two main modules of the IELTS test: the Academic module and the General Training module. The Academic module is designed for those who plan to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking country, while the General Training module is intended for those who are going to work or migrate to an English-speaking country.

Here's a brief overview of each module:

1. Academic Module: The Academic module is suitable for those who want to pursue higher education, such as a bachelor's or master's degree, in an English-speaking country. This module assesses a candidate's ability to understand and use academic language and concepts.

The test consists of four sections:

  • Listening: Candidates listen to recordings of academic lectures and conversations and answer questions based on the information provided.
  • Reading: Candidates read and answer questions based on passages from academic textbooks and journals.
  • Writing: Candidates are required to write two tasks - a descriptive report based on a graph, chart, or diagram, and an essay on an academic topic.
  • Speaking: Candidates are interviewed by an examiner to assess their ability to speak English in an academic setting.

2. General Training Module: The General Training module is suitable for those who plan to work or migrate to an English-speaking country. This module assesses a candidate's ability to use English in practical, everyday situations.

The test also consists of four sections:

  • Listening: Candidates listen to recordings of conversations and interviews in everyday situations and answer questions based on the information provided.
  • Reading: Candidates read and answer questions based on passages from newspapers, magazines, and other general reading materials.
  • Writing: Candidates are required to write two tasks - a letter in response to a situation or problem, and an essay on a general topic.
  • Speaking: Candidates are interviewed by an examiner to assess their ability to communicate in English in everyday situations.
  • Both modules have the same speaking test, but the listening, reading, and writing tests differ in content and format. Candidates should choose the module that is most appropriate for their needs.
